It's a tough call and based on each individual case. I know my father-in-law, after his 2nd stroke was incapable of walking, talking communicating in any way and even swallowing. He ended up in a nursing home / palliative care in a bed, with a diaper and catheter, a feeding tube in his stomach for well over a year. There was absolutely no quality of life and I bet his last months were absolute hell on earth. Sometimes it's really okay to let them go in peace, especially when the prognosis is simply prolonging the agony.

My mother has been in the hospital with a feeding tube for several months. I have been asked about DNR (do not resuscitate) a few times. It's always about the money. My mother has no DNR, because her signed DNR was from another state and will not be accepted here. One poster made a comment about keeping your parents our of nursing homes and to take care of them yourselves. Good luck. Everyone steps in when you try to take care of them yourselves. You would not believe how hard it is to keep them at home once they enter the medical system, via ER or home health aides. My mother was in a rehab center to receive rehab for her hip. She kept saying she wanted to go home. When I tried to push it... I was required by laws to "protect" the elderly to have certain equipment at home. But, they would not provide me with prescriptions for the equipment that I could turn into the insurance company the reasoning being that I was making a decision to take my mother home which they co

GREAT Video...am emailing it around. I agree about the Kavorkian/Hitler Health Program. How evident that "the bottom line" has taken over in corporate America. Thank God I got out of there!! When people begin talking about the bottom line as more important than people, that's your cue. Educate them, then run the other way!

If you've ever watched a person you love, with no tubes, die - it will be forever etched in your memory. This is torture - for both them AND you. However, until there are nutrients that can heal a patient on their death bed, and that there is hope, I will have to agree on Euthanasia. My mother had a 'do not resuscitate' issued, but what she would rather have had was a 'help me go swiftly' if she could have. It had nothing to do with money. We have this health care for free in Canada. It was about dying with dignity and no pain. It's what we do with our pets, because it's legal and yes - in many cases because we can't afford exorbitantly costly procedures, with no guarantees - to help them stay alive, and while we should do everything possible with people, there comes a time when we can't. I do agree with using methods that could help keep them alive, if they could be comfortable and happy and have some quality of life - but I don't agree with keeping them alive to languish

How to Die by Dying Into Love This is a great discussion to be having. In fact, any discussion of death is a good thing. Why? Because death in our society I think is seen from a completely distorted perspective that in the long run does us all a lot of harm. There’s a new video series at http://www.dyingintolove.com that addresses a lot of the issues around death presented by four leading authorities who have been sitting with the dying and teaching others to do the same for over 40 years. It’s called Dying Into Love and it features Ram Dass, Joan Halifax, Dale Borglum and Bodhi Be. Before our “modern” age, virtually all cultures on earth wove Death rituals into the fabric of everyday life, enjoying the balance, appreciation and connection with their ancestors and children’s children that such practices create. But, in today’s disconnected consumer culture, life is seen as an entitlement and death has no valued role – our ancestors are forgotten and the earth and our childr

You could save a BUNCH of money by keeping your elderly parents OUT OF A NURSING HOME. What ever happened to taking care of them yourself?

Fewer returns to the hospital? Well, yeah, once you get the idea - why would you go back? I'l be taking my chances at home.
