When people of note take a stand against the machine, they all too often commit suicide, take an overdose, or just disappear. The likes of Jon Stewart and Bill Maher are in the perfect position to deliver the truth without consequence (thus far). Viewers do take these messages seriously. Making folks laugh is how you get them to listen to the stuff they would otherwise change the channel to avoid. Kudos, Mr Maher, and thank you.

It's good to see someone speaking up, but I have to apologize 'cuz I feel another one of my devil's advocate moments coming on. My belief is that once we turn a protest into a comedic spiel, it stays there. You and I are sensitive to his message, so we laugh and absorb, but others are there for the laugh only. They look for the corner of a mouth to turn up, some eye rolls or a well-timed head shake of disbelief, or in this case some Uncle Tom McMahon chortling, to cue a laugh. These late-night monologues, because they can be funny, remove the edge, and consequently remove our angst. It's so successful, you'd think it was planned that way. People go to bed feeling good, not angry, and they'll tune in tomorrow night as well to have some more of their anger assuaged... and feel good about things they shouldn't feel good about. There are no issues. Just late-night jokes. Similarly, there is no end to the crimes of the "SEE EYE A", and they love being portrayed or written about as bumbl
